The US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) estimates 21,000 deaths per year from household exposure to radon. Radon is the second leading cause of Lung Cancer in the United States today. Between 12 and 20 percent of all homes from Macon north (Georgia Realtor, 2004) are above the EPA action level of 4 pCi/L for radon. The American Lung Association, Surgeon General, and USEPA recommend that All Homes be tested for radon. HUD and Fannie Mae require radon testing in private homes and multi-family dwellings.

According to recommendations from the US EPA, Surgeon General and the American Lung Association, everyone should perform a radon test. In Georgia, if you live Gwinnett, Fulton, DeKalb or Cobb Counties, you live in a Zone 1 Radon Area with measured concentrations that have a higher likelihood of causing lung cancer. Testing for radon is simple and inexpensive and the only means of understanding your health risk. Home buyers now commonly ask for radon testing as a condition for sale and/or purchase. If you find high levels of radon in your home, mitigation or fixing the problem is relatively easy and inexpensive when performed by a qualified professional. The US EPA recommends measuring a room where people spend significant time on the lowest level of the house. That might be a basement recreation room or a first floor bedroom, depending on your house structure and use.
